BAA and SBIR Phase 1
In 2017, KTi was part of a winning team that won BAA and SBIR Phase 1 awards from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop and validate an end-to-end capability that combines active “space object beacons"; automated, low-cost, ground collection sites; and cloud-based computing to provide near-real time 24/7 space situational awareness (SSA), explicit in-depth space object identification, and space object behavior monitoring.
GENERATION 1 PROTOTYPE
Prototype Development (Jan - Aug 2018)
1st Generation SOARS beacons were delivered August 2018.
Beacons measured approximately 5.5cm by 7cm (w/ antenna), weighed under 50 g, and electronics are radiation tolerant
HIGH ALTITUDE TESTING
SOARS Testing (Sept 2018)
September 2019, KTi successfully tested four (4) Generation 1 beacons aboard two high-altitude balloon flights up to 67,000 ft over 5 hours of flight.
DARPA CONTRACT PHASE 2
Spaceflight Design and Qualification (Jan - Dec 2019)
January 2019. KTi was part of a winning team that won the SOARS SBIR Phase 2 award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Under this contract, five (5) spaceflight ready beacons will be tested and delivered for a flight demo (TBD) as early as February 2020.
